The San Diego Maritime Week STEM Fest, November 13th, 2010

Student Competitions

Participants are invited to participate in one of four areas of interest. The deadline for teachers to register is November 5th.

1. Underwater Vehicle Competition

A STEM based challenge of developing a water-tight hull which could serve as an underwater remotely operated vehicle (UROV). Teams may display any type of ROUV or AUV to compete in one of 3 categories:

1. Buoyancy Demonstration
2. Maneuverability Demonstration - Obstacle Course
3. Data Collection Application

2. Graphic Design Competition

Using graphic design resources, participants will produce a logo printed on a poster for the Maritime STEM Fest. Additional resources such as a flyer or postcard may also be included, but are not required. The final products will be presented at a booth at the Maritime STEM Fest and competition winners will be selected.

3. Environmental Project & Exhibit Competition

Participants will develop a general environmental exhibition which presents the results of an environmental study or restoration project concerning an area related to one of San Diego's bays, estuaries, tidelands or terrestrial riparian areas influencing a salt water area. The presentation of this exhibit will be interactive and designed to have a hands-on approach for educating younger, middle school age students (as well as the general public) about the results and research involved in this project.

4. All Things Maritime Competition

This is an open-ended competition that is guided by the creativity and ingenuity of the entries. All entries must contain elements of science, technology, engineering or math that is guided by a maritime theme. The submissions will be presented at a booth at the fair, so some type of visual or audio components are necessary.

The Science Expo will be held at the Embarcadero Marina Park South, in the Port of San Diego and is the kick-off event for the 2nd Annual San Diego Maritime Week. San Diego is the leading maritime technology center in the U.S., The goals of the San Diego Maritime Week are to celebrate "all things maritime," to raise the visibility of this important San Diego sector locally, nationally and internationally, and to promote global collaboration.

Information for Exhibitors

Representatives from various maritime industries and organizations are invited to discuss career opportunities within their companies to job seekers and to educate students on the career opportunities available in STEM related industries.

Register for job fair and maritime companies
Exhibit spaces are $400.

Community, educational and non-profit organizations are invited to raise awareness and educate students focused on maritime conservation and awareness, research, education and more.

Registration for non-profits and other organizations is $100. Fee waivers are available, contact us for more information.

All proceeds from the Maritime STEM Fest go to support science and engineering students in underdeveloped communities.
